Malawi Modes of Transmission Analysis and HIV Prevention Response: Distribution of new HIV infections in Malawi for 2013 – Recommendations for Prevention Strategies

The 2013 Know Your Epidemic and Response (KYER) report presents findings of a comprehensive consolidation, analysis and synthesis of the available HIV epidemiological and behavioural data for Malawi as of 2013. This study analysed the distribution of new HIV infections by modes of transmission using the Modes of Transmission (MOT) model. The study also assessed coverage, equity, intensity and quality of existing HIV and AIDS interventions in the country. This is the second KYER study to be conducted in Malawi. The first study was conducted in 2009.

Historical Mapping of HIV Programmes 1985 – 2012 in Malawi, Summary Report

After the reporting of the first HIV case in 1985, HIV prevalence in Malawi rose to nearly 17% in the late 1990s. From around 2000, it started declining. By 2010 it had declined to 10.6%. The underlying factors to the decline are however not clearly explained. Knowing the factors behind the decline is extremely important for Malawi as it guides HIV and AIDS resource allocation and programming in general.

Malawi National Aids Spending Assessment (NASA) 2010/11 - 2011/12

The National AIDS Commission (NAC) having been mandated to oversee the coordination of the national response, recognizes the importance of monitoring and evaluation in ensuring that goals are achieved in a timely and efficient manner. Therefore, conducting a second round of NASA assessment for the period 2010/2011 to 2011/2012 provides the needed information to assess the use of resources for HIV and AIDS related activities and also plan effectively for future activities.
